On January 11-12, 2025, the 2nd Young Scholar Workshop on “Mechanics for Marine Environments and Natural Hazards” was successfully held at Tsinghua University’s Shenzhen International Graduate School (SIGS), Shenzhen, China. Jointly organized by the Ocean Geological Hazards and Environment Committee (TC4) of the International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction (ICGdR), the Coastal and Maritime Hydraulics Committee of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR), and the Environmental Mechanics Committee of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM), the event gathered around 70 researchers from leading institutions, including the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of Macau, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Hohai University, Tongji University, Ocean University of China, Southern University of Science and Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Mechanics, Laoshan Laboratory, Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, and Qingdao Institute of Marine Geology. The workshop was hosted by Prof. JING Lu, Assistant Professor at Tsinghua SIGS.

In the opening ceremony, Prof. HU Zhenzhong, Deputy Dean of the Institute for Ocean Engineering, Tsinghua SIGS, delivered the opening remarks and provided an overview of Tsinghua University's ocean-related discipline. Prof. WANG Fawu, Director-General ICGdR, Prof. LIU Xiaolei, Chair of ICGdR-TC4, Prof. HE Zhiguo, Chair of the Coastal and Maritime Hydraulics Technical Committee of IAHR, and Prof. SUN Hongguang, Deputy Director of the Environmental Mechanics Committee of CSTAM, each delivered an opening speech.

The keynote session was moderated by Chair Professor YU Xiping from Southern University of Science and Technology. This workshop featured 17 invited presentations, covering the topics of submarine landslides, fluid-particle coupling, cold seep detection, multiphase flow simulation, turbidity currents, and monopile foundations for offshore wind turbines. For instance, Prof. WANG Fawu from Tongji University presented "Experimental Research and Numerical Simulation of Submarine Landslide Dynamics and Disaster Effects", Prof. ZHAO Jidong from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology discussed "Computational Mechanics for Fluid-Particle Coupling Problems". The presentations highlighted advances in experimental research, numerical simulations, and technology development, showcasing interdisciplinary innovations.
Keynote presentations
During the workshop, participants engaged in fruitful discussions on mechanics issues related to marine resource and energy development. In the closing ceremony, Prof. WANG Fawu congratulated the organizers on the forum’s success, emphasizing its importance in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and academic exchange. He also encouraged the organizers to continue the forum’s traditions, expand its global influence, and attract more international researchers in the future.
