The promotion of construction projects related to hydraulic and hydropower engineering, as well as the development of renewable and clean hydropower energy, is a significant measure to effectively alleviate energy shortage, improve its energy structure and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and an important guarantee for the realization of sustainable economic and social development. However, throughout the life cycle of a reservoir, from its initial planning and design, construction and building, to storage and operation, there is an exposure to various geohazard risks. The risks pose a threat not only to the safety of the reservoir project but also have a considerable impact on the surrounding ecological environment and the safety of people's lives and properties. The identification, monitoring, warning, prevention and management of geohazards throughout the life cycle of a reservoir has become a major challenge for academics, engineers and government departments.
Under such current circumstances, it is really timely to institute a committee on Reservoirs Geo-disaster Prevention and Control. The committee aims to put forward and guide important key scientific issues and future development directions; to solve and consult the main difficulties and dilemmas of geohazard prevention and control in the whole life cycle of reservoirs; to discuss and review the latest progress of theories and methods of risk assessment, monitoring and early warning, the impact of heavy rainfall and reservoir level regulation, the application of digital twin technology and green prevention and control technology of geohazards; to prepare and formulate corresponding reservoir landslide instability prevention and control norms; promote the innovation and popularisation of geohazard prevention and control technologies through interdisciplinary international cooperation and academic exchanges, in addition to establishing links, exchanges and co-operation with the government, universities, enterprises and other scientific research institutes.
